Summer Skill Building Series

Philadelphia Soul: Batik Scarf Workshop

July 11, 2023
3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

When artist Yinka Shonibare MBE created Space Walk in collaboration with the FWM Studio in 2002, he created four textile designs inspired by Dutch wax-printed batiks and the music tradition of the 1970s known as the “Philly Sound.” Join this workshop to learn Nigerian batik techniques using paraffin wax and sculpted foam tools. Design your own sound-inspired scarf in celebration of Shonibare’s Nigerian heritage and the powerful influence of music on mark-making and pattern.

Organized in conjunction with Sonic Presence (or Absence): Sound in Contemporary Art.
