Summer Skill Building Series

No-Waste Simple Tunic Sewing Workshop in partnership with Fabscrap

July 18, 2023
3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Jody Pinto wearing “Hair Shirt”, 1978. Silkscreen on pig skin. 32 x 54".

Jodi Pinto’s Hair Shirt began as an exploration of the landscape with cascading plants that evolved into depictions of body hair. The simple pattern pieces, hand-drawn by Pinto, inspired us to draw up our own no-waste tunic pattern. Work with a beautiful array of fabrics rescued from the waste stream, learn how to customize a garment, sew a French seam, and add pockets!

We’ll have sewing machines for participants to use but feel free to bring your own. Participants will also receive a 10% discount for their next shopping trip to Fabscrap, the generous provider of fabric materials used in this workshop!

Organized in conjunction with Museum As…

About the Participants

FABSCRAP is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2016 to address commercial textile waste in New York City and divert it from landfill. FABSCRAP provides convenient pickup of unwanted material—including fabric headers, mutilated garment samples, mock-ups, cutting room scraps, and large pieces of leftover or excess fabric—from fashion and interior design businesses, and with the help of volunteers, sorts this material for proper recycling and reuse. Textiles are either downcycled (shredded for use in insulation, carpet padding, moving blankets, etc.) or made available for reuse and upcycling to students, artists, crafters, and other shoppers.
