Summer Skill Building Series

Exposing the Elements

June 23, 2022
3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Sarah Sze, “Four Rocks,” 2014. Mixed media, photographs of rock printed on Tyvek, polystyrene foam. 14 x 36 x 30 inches. Collection of The Fabric Workshop and Museum. Photo credit: Carlos Avendaño.

Time keeps on slippin’, slippin’. Our current exhibition, Narrative Terrain: Landscape as Storytelling, features several works created by artists that have sought to capture the passing of time using the screenprinting process. After viewing the works of Sarah Sze, Alison Rossiter, and Laura Owens, head to our print studio to create a series of drawings on mylar by exploring marks with various tools. Learn first-hand how to expose a screen for printing by testing how long the design should be exposed in the process. Leave with your own colorful gradient print and an understanding of the ways mark-making and exposure can affect the quality of an image and its expression of time.

Summer Skill Building Series
Enhance your studio or teaching practice with this five-week summer skill building series. Each week, we’ll glean inspiration from works on view in current exhibitions or from artist boxes in our archives to learn a new skill to use in the classroom or your own personal art practice.
