Tune in for this Zoom room turned live radio show in a laundromat, a collaboration between Philadelphia Contemporary and The Fabric Workshop and Museum celebrating the work of Jonathan Lyndon Chase. Presented as an extension of Philadelphia Contemporary’s most recent episode of Love Jawns: A Mixtape, the program will also feature an introduction to Chase’s first solo museum exhibition, Big Wash, opening at FWM on January 5, 2021.
Featuring new work created during their 2019-2020 screenprinting residency at FWM—integrated into selected paintings, drawings, and video—Chase turns their attention to the laundromat as a site that is at once private and public. Big Wash furthers their signature ability to move seamlessly between history and fantasy, as well as interior and exterior, with vivid depictions of eroticism, domesticity, queerness, nostalgia, and tenderness. Chase’s vibrant textile design punctuates the exhibition and acts as a stand-in for Black queer bodies navigating both the rawness of the urban landscape and intimacy of domestic settings.
