Learn how to print using traditional Indian carved wood blocks to create your own unique designs! Beginning with a brief history on wood block printing traditions in India and China, master visiting artist Sunaina Bhalla will share a demonstration of different methods of blockprinting and invite you to practice on paper. With over 100 motifs to choose from, you’ll then create your own printed fabric and tote bag.
All materials are included in the price of the class. An assortment of hand carved wood blocks will be available for purchase with prices ranging from $5–20.
Sunaina Bhalla (she/her) is a contemporary artist of Indian origin, living in Singapore. Having completed her formal education as a textile designer specializing in print, she chose to pursue an immersive education in the traditional art form of Nihonga in Japan, where she spent 5 years studying under Suiko Ohta-sensei of the Kyoshin-Do school. She completed her Masters of Fine Arts degree from Goldsmiths University, London and Lasalle College of the Arts. Sunaina runs wood block printing workshops in Singapore, Myanmar, Indonesia, the United States and Australia and is working with schools to introduce this process into curriculums in Singapore. She has exhibited in Japan, India, Singapore, Europe and the Middle East and her works are in the permanent collections of the ESSL Museum, Vienna and Mumbai Airports Authority, India, and in various private collections globally.
