Traditional Indian Block Printing with Padmini Govind

Natural blockprinting workshop

In this day-long workshop, explore the art of Indian woodblock printing. Hosted in FWM’s printing studio, participants will be led by Padmini Govind of Tharangini Studios, a family-run textile printing studio in Bangalore, India, committed to fair trade practices and uplifting local artisan communities. Using beautiful hand-carved blocks from Tharangini’s archive, participants will learn to print with both natural dyes and synthetic pigments while developing both a silk scarf and cotton tote bag. Workshop size is limited to 30 participants.

About the Participants

Padmini Govind runs a family-owned heritage handblock print studio, Tharangini. Established in 1977, it specializes in fine block printing for designers in India and around the globe, such as Anthropologie, Pollack, Starbucks, Trenery and Good Earth. Govind’s passion is to support handblock printing in a holistic way, with fair trade, ecofriendly and sustainable practices. She has also started several vocational training projects for Autism centers in Bangalore providing much-need employment options for youth in a lower income segment. Tharangini has partnered with Karnataka State Women’s Welfare center and other non-profits that provide dignity in work for women who are otherwise marginalized.
