The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM) is a contemporary art museum, with an internationally-acclaimed Artists-in-Residence (AIR) program, located in Center City, Philadelphia. Founded in 1977, FWM encourages artists at all stages of their careers to experiment with new materials and new media in a veritable living laboratory. FWM is easily accessible via public transit and is steps from Reading Terminal Market and blocks from Chinatown and historic City Hall.

Visitor Services Assistant

FWM immediately seeks a Visitor Services Assistant who will be responsible for providing a high-quality museum experience in an efficient and friendly manner. Visitor Services Assistants are ambassadors of FWM and act as our visitors’ first point of contact with the museum. Visitor Services Assistants provide exceptional communication and customer service skills and should enjoy interacting with a diverse audience.

This part-time (16 hours total, Friday 12pm-6pm, and Saturday and Sunday 12pm-5pm) position takes place onsite and requires weekends, with the possibility of telework based on the City of Philadelphia’s COVID-19 policies. The rate is $15/hour and benefits include vacation time and sick/personal days, paid holidays, access to an employee assistance program, FWM membership, FWM Museum Shop employee discount, American Alliance of Museums membership.

Responsibilities

• Prepare Museum for visitation at the beginning of day and close at end of day.
• Ensure a high quality of service and a positive visitor experience through participation in the full cycle of visitor experience at FWM, including customer service, visitor safety, and museum information.
• Work with FWM’s education, exhibitions, development and communications teams to ensure that information about FWM’s history, exhibitions, and programs are accurate and effectively shared with the public.
• Address the needs of FWM Members, VIPs and special visitors in an appropriate and timely manner, and escalate difficult and sensitive visitor issues to the supervisory level when necessary.
• Assist callers and guests on site with information about admission tickets, cancellations, and member discount codes.
• Communicate in a productive and effective way to Supervisor on all visitor-related issues, and interdepartmentally during monthly staff meetings.
• Perform light housekeeping to maintain professional appearance of all public areas and front- and back-of-house Visitor Services areas.
• Handle ticketing system operations and maintenance, including reporting technical issues to Communications Manager.
• As assigned by the Supervisor, assist Exhibitions department with research for upcoming exhibitions or artists projects, contribute data entry into CollectionsSpace or other database records, and send interdepartmental communications to prepare Visitor Services for upcoming exhibitions and programs.
• Assist in Museum Shop as needed.
• Perform other responsibilities as needed and assigned by Supervisor.

Qualifications

• Prior front desk, museum, or gallery experience with extensive knowledge of modern and contemporary art strongly preferred.
• Superb customer service skills, professionalism, and flexibility.
• Experience in retail and Point of Sale systems.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and preferably QuickBooks Point of Sale.
• ShowClix or other ticketing system experience a plus.

Shopworks Coordinator

FWM seeks a Shopworks Coordinator who will work to foster FWM’s business savvy, to support artists in new ways, diversify revenue, and encourage visitor engagement both inside and outside of FWM’s walls by expanding access to mission-related products. Working closely with the Director of Studio Operations, Director of Facilities & Museum Shop, Director of Exhibition & Curator, the Shopworks Committee, as well as external fabricators, the Shopworks Coordinator will handle the technical and administrative components for developing artist multiples, merchandise derived from objects in FWM’s permanent collection, contracted work from external institutions, and FWM shop merchandise.

The Shopworks Coordinator will report directly to the Director of Studio Operations. They will also work with the Director of Exhibitions & Curator to foster relationships with FWM Artists-in-Residence and primarily Philadelphia-based artists whose work lends itself to this process, and with the Project Coordinator who will advise on FWM’s collaborative process. They will work with the Director of Facilities & Museum Shop and a retail consultant to respond to market analysis with product development.

This full-time (40 hours per week, M-F, 10am – 6pm) position takes place onsite. The salary is $58,240 annually, and benefits include medical, vision, and dental, access to retirement savings, vacation time and sick/personal days, paid holidays, access to an employee assistance program, FWM membership, FWM Museum Shop employee discount, American Alliance of Museums membership.

Responsibilities

  • Manages all aspects for realization of Shopworks product, from planning and development through manufacturing and delivery.
    • Works closely with the Executive Director, Director of Studio Operations, and the Director of Facilities & Museum Shop to develop strategies for Shopworks products, including research, planning, and sourcing.
    • Sources materials, vendors, commercial partners, and fabrication processes to bring Shopworks product to fruition and maximize profitability.
    • Works with Executive Director and Director of Studio Operations to create and adhere to budgets and communicates with Finance department as necessary.
    • Communicates updates on Shopworks to the Director of Studio Operations, Executive Director, Director of Facilities & Museum Shop, and Curator, and across other departments.
  • Works with Curator and Registrar to identify artworks that can be commercially licensed from FWM’s permanent collection.
  • Serves as liaison for revenue-generating projects that involve the FWM Studio.
  • Translates analytics, sales data, and market research to ensure production of commercially viable work.
  • Creates Shopworks budgets and production and delivery calendars, coordinating with Studio, Exhibitions, Museum Shop, and Finance departments.
  • Orders and tracks all materials.
  • Communicates with and manages vendors, contractors, and manufacturers.
  • Coordinates photoshoots, videos, and graphics with Communications Manager.
  • Develops calendar with Communications Manager for marketing products, including progress and product content and media to build brand buzz.
  • Participates in Studio-wide and Museum-wide planning processes, as appropriate and as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Manages Studio contractors, interns, and apprentices.
  • Maintains cleanliness of studio facilities and conducts general maintenance and repairs.
  • Supports adherence to organizational mission in all activities, which is informed by extensive knowledge of FWM’s institutional history, including past projects, as well as emerging trends in the field.
  • Attends and assists at FWM special events, programs, and meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • BA or equivalent years’ experience required, MA is a plus.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ demonstrated history of leading and managing development and production of product, from conception through implementation.
  • Knowledge of contemporary artists and practices is a requirement.
  • Creative problem-solver and resourceful; must be able to research and source new supplies and industry partners.
    Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with an attention to detail; capable of multi-tasking and meeting tight deadlines.
  • Ability to compile, analyze, and report project results along with forwarding plan projections and updates; keep and organize records of projects.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Diligent and persistent in follow-up and completion of multiple projects by monitoring each participating department and staff, including apprentices and contractors.
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and dedicated.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office is a must, Adobe Creative Suite and digital imaging is a plus.

Internships

The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM) seeks students with an interest in Philadelphia’s arts and cultural community. Our interns are high school and college students who are interested in first-hand experience in the programming and administration of a contemporary art museum and collaborative workshop. Under the supervision of a staff member, interns assist with regular departmental activities and specific programmatic activities as assigned.

To support more equitable opportunities in the museum field, FWM offers only paid internships via designated funding from grants or an intern’s school. Paid internship positions will be listed here.

      • Development Intern:  Will work with the Development department, which oversees fundraising initiatives for FWM. The Development Intern will supply administrative support on activities including: grant writing for government, foundation, corporate, and individual sponsorship; cultivating museum membership; and helping to organize and staff events. Excellent writing skills are required. Some art history knowledge, non-profit management, or arts administration background is preferred.
      • Education Intern:  Will work with the Education department to assist with school group planning for the academic year; tours for adults, school groups, and family workshops; education program evaluation; and developing, assembling, and distributing educational packets.
      • Finance Intern: Will work most closely with the Controller and senior administrative staff who are responsible for overseeing such activities as executing accounts payable & payroll; performing reconciliations; preparing grant reports for Development staff; managing the annual audit; and performing cash projections. Finance Intern duties will include processing weekly bills, copying and filing, compiling data into reports in Excel or Word, and other duties as assigned. Excellent organizational skills are required. An interest in accounting, business, and nonprofit management a plus.
      • Museum Store Intern:  The Museum Store Manager markets a wide selection of unique, artist-designed, functional objects created on-site at the Museum. This internship is an excellent opportunity to work in a non-profit arts organization, while simultaneously learning about general sales and marketing skills. The intern will work closely with the Manager, with an emphasis on developing an aggressive marketing plan, increasing annual sales, and establishing inventory control procedures. Marketing knowledge or business management knowledge is preferred; computer literacy is essential.
      • Photo/Video Intern: The Photo/Video Intern will assist with tasks under the responsibility of the AV Department. This includes photo/video documentation of current events at FWM, from artists’ projects, education activities at the Museum, to assisting with set up of multi-media equipment. The intern will also assist with processing, editing, cataloging, and entering meta data of AV files to FWM’s Digital Asset Management system. Practical knowledge of photography, videography, and Adobe software—including Bridge, Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, and some database programs—is required.
      • Studio Intern:  The FWM Studio staff works with artists-in-residence on research, planning, and execution of artist projects. The Studio intern will have an opportunity to work in a creative and unique environment with experienced art professionals. Candidates should have a strong interest in art, be detail-oriented, work well with their hands, and be self-motivated. Studio internships are offered on an as needed basis.
