The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM) presents three exhibitions of work by Philadelphia Photographers: Will Brown, David Graham, and Ray K. Metzker. Public opening reception Friday, May 2, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00pm.

Philadelphia photographer Will Brown’s work stands within a long tradition of street photography as discrete, momentary records of a time, independent of implied narrative. This exhibition series continues at The New Temporary Contemporary, 1222 Arch Street, with photographs by masters of American photography David Graham—a photographer in love with the world around him who uses the medium to visually embrace what he sees—and Ray K. Metzker, a virtuoso who has pursued his chosen medium making extraordinary photographs for the better part of six decades. Graham is known for a photographic body of work that chronicles colorful, surreal, and bizarre aspects of the American landscape and culture, while incorporating popular photography genres, such as family portraits and vacation photos. Metzker is known for his experimentation with black-and-white photography, especially his cityscape and landscape photographic series, and his use of composites and multiple exposures.

Also opening that evening is Abelardo Morell: Pictures in Three Museums, featuring images taken at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and The Barnes Foundation.

About the Artist

American, born 1952, lives in Newtown, PA.

David Graham was born in Abington, PA in 1952, and raised in the Philadelphia-area. Graham received his BFA from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, and his MFA in Photography from the Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia. Major solo exhibitions of his work have been organized at the James A. Michener Art Museum, Doylestown (2004); The Print Center, Philadelphia (2003); the Erie Art Museum, Erie (2002); the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (1999); and the International Center of Photography, New York (1987). His photography has been included in group exhibitions at the Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington; and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago.

Graham’s work is held in numerous museum collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Bibliotèque Nationale de Paris. This work has also been published in seven books, including American Beauty (Aperture 1987), Only in America (Knopf 1991), Alone Together (Pond Press 2003) and Almost Paradise (Pond Press 2008). Among his many awards, he has won multiple fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and a 1984 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. He also works in the freelance world, shooting for magazines including The New York Times Magazine, Fortune, Forbes, and Details. Additionally, Graham has shot ad campaigns, most notably for MasterCard. He has taught photography at the School of Visual Arts, NY; Sarah Lawrence College, NY; the International Center of Photography, NY; and he is a professor in the Photography Program at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Graham is currently represented by Gallery 339 in Philadelphia and PDNB Gallery in Dallas.
