Two-Day Intensive

Freedom of Movement Pants Workshop

March 8, 2025 - March 9, 2025
10:00 am to 6:00 pm

A shirtless man in long flowing pants faces downward. His pants have a zig-zag pattern and extend well beyond his feet, trailing behind him.
Richard Tuttle, in collaboration with The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia, Pants, 1979. Pigment on bleached cotton muslin. 72 x 26 inches. Limited edition. Photo credit: Will Brown.

In 1979, Richard Tuttle worked in collaboration with FWM to create Pants, a small edition of costumes for the Pennsylvania Ballet. With their exaggerated length and electric zig-zag pattern, they capture the energy of forward motion while defying traditional utility.

In this two-day workshop, explore the dynamic process of hand-painting with fiber-reactive dye (cold water dyes that are fixed chemically rather than with heat). Then learn to sew your own pair of loose flowing pants!
