The Fabric Workshop and Museum is pleased to present Ways and Means, a special lecture by Carrie Mae Weems. Considered one of the most influential contemporary American artists, Carrie Mae Weems has investigated universal themes such as family relationships and cultural identity for more than 35 years. Her complex body of work incorporates mediums ranging from photographs and audio recordings to works on fabric and video installations to address issues such as sexism, class, political systems and the consequences of power.
Weems is a MacArthur Foundation Fellow and was one of the first artists to receive the US Department of State’s Medal of Arts in 2012. A retrospective exhibition of her work, Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Film and Video, was organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville, TN in 2012 and then traveled to the Portland Art Museum, OR (2013); Cleveland Museum of Art, OH (2013); Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts, Stanford, CA (2014); and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY (2014).
She was an Artist-in-Residence at The Fabric Workshop and Museum in 1991, and created The Apple of Adam’s Eye which became a central element in Carrie Mae Weems’ exhibition at FWM in 1993 and subsequently in Ritual & Revolution, her 1998 exhibition for the Dakar Biennale. This celebratory lecture marks the conclusion of FWM’s 40th anniversary exhibition, Process and Practice: 40 Years of Experimentation.
