Cynthia Hopkins: Requiem for Five Deceased Musical Performance Works

October 2, 2015
5:30 pm

FWM artist-in-residence Cynthia Hopkins is known for enthralling audiences with her imaginatively creative and personal performance works. On Friday, October 2, join Hopkins as she premieres a new live performance piece, Requiem for Five Deceased Musical Performance Works, at The Fabric Workshop and Museum. Staged within her first museum exhibition, Memorabilia, this musical event will feature Hopkins along with five vocalists, and will function as a formal memorial service for the performances referenced in the works on view.

During her residency at FWM, Hopkins created double-sided, large-scale memorial quilts—constructed from the detritus of her past performance works—that honor the spirit of these ephemeral events and transform them into a physical form of remembrance. Through song and narration, the artist will guide the audience through the memorial quilts on display and, in turn, set the past performances to rest. The event will be a reflective and celebratory experience honoring the lifespan of a performance work.

Hopkins’ past performance works that are the subject of Requiem will be:
Accidental Nostalgia (2005)
Must Don’t Whip ‘Um (2007)
The Success of Failure (or, The Failure of Success) (2009)
The Truth: A Tragedy (2010)
This Clement World (2012)
