For the first time in recent history FWM invites the public into its Studio to observe the artistic process as it unfolds. Current Artist-in-Residence Samara Golden and Project Coordinator Abby Lutz will demonstrate and discuss the collaborative work they’re undertaking as part of the creation of Golden’s upcoming exhibition, Upstairs at Steve’s. First Friday attendees will also have the chance to engage in their own hands-on activity; view the exhibitions Lorna Simpson: Spilling, Breaking Waves and Echoes and Reverberations; and enjoy light refreshments.

Hands-on Activity: Comfort Cloths
When we were small, a scrap of blanket tucked into our pocket or slipped into our backpack could offer the comfort and courage we needed. What is the adult equivalent to a security blanket? How can color and pattern offer a much needed comfort? Taking inspiration from the conversation with Golden and Lutz, participants can blockprint their own handkerchiefs, exploring the idea of comfort through color, pattern, and design.
