FWM invites you to celebrate the historic process of weaving and its parallels to hair braiding, defined as "the original fiber art" by artist Sonya Clark. In addition to exploring the symbolism and construction of flags, Clarks work has long investigated African hairstyles and their relationship to weaving and other textile processes. For many of us, hair is an expression of identity. What does your hair say about you? How does it symbolize who you are? Have you ever thought of your hair as a way to connect with your community? During this session, learn up to three new hair braiding techniques from local experts and have a photo taken of your new hairstyle in our professional portrait studio!

Screen-printing demonstrations and gallery tours will also be available. Bring your own garment to screen-print a braid-inspired pattern. Take a tour of Clark’s participatory installation Reconstruction Exercise and try out weaving on a loom in our gallery. Invite your friends to enjoy an afternoon of self-expression, togetherness, and live music. Snacks and refreshments will be served.
